Altamont is a growing community with a population of 2300. Located in Effingham County on Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 40, the city is midway between St. Louis, Missouri and Terre Haute, Indiana. We are a progressive community with an excellent school system, active business district, numerous churches and attractive residential neighborhoods and subdivisions. Agriculture is a prominent force in the Altamont area but compliments the existence of manufacturing employment locally and within the county. Altamont is a community that strives to provide a range of activities from the Altamont Living Museum to the excitement of the Effingham County Fair to the linkage of the past by visiting the Dr. Charles Wright House or the Annual Mill Road Threshermans Association Steam, Gas & Threshing Show.

On August 8, 1872, the town of Altamont adopted the village form of government which consists of a mayor and four council members. On April 16, 1901, the voters of the village of Altamont adopted the city organization form of government and became the city of Altamont.
