Water within the City of Altamont is furnished by a city owned plant and
system. A water tower and tank were erected in 1912 and part of the water distribution system was laid. The major part of the water system was laid in 1923 and shallow wells were drilled west of the City on the Mound to furnish the water supply for the City. In 1935, the twenty acre City Reservoir was constructed along with a filtration plant. In 1954 the waterworks system was improved and extended to the Fairgrounds Addition and the City Reservoir was deepened and widened. In 1957 a ground storage reservoir was constructed at the water plant to guard against the increase of fire insurance rates. In 1973 a fifty-seven acre lake with a two hundred seventy-five million gallon capacity fed by a six hundred eighty-five acre watershed area was constructed southeast of Altamont and a new water treatment plant was built in the same area. A new two hundred thousand gallon water tower was also erected at the south end of Schmidt Park. During 1995 a laboratory, pumproom and restroom addition were built onto the waterplant. A second clarifier was installed for improved water treatment and two on-site storage reservoirs constructed for finished water storage. New water mains were also completed to eliminate deadends which included the installation of a main under Conrail and Missouri Pacific Railroads at Tenth Street. During this period the two hundred thousand gallon water tower was also repainted.
